Tips for Hiking Lion’s Head in Cape Town
How to Nail the Best Sunrise Hike in Cape Town

Cape Town, South Africa
This is my #1 recommendation in Cape Town. I’ve hiked it about a gazillion times, and honestly… if you came here and didn’t hike Lion’s Head, did you even really come here?? 🤔
Here’s how to make the most of it:
Time it right. Aim to reach the top ~40 minutes before sunrise (especially if there’s “cloud porn” — the sky often puts on its best show before the sun actually pops).
Backtrack your start time. The hike takes 40–60 minutes depending on fitness. So if sunrise is at 6:00am, start hiking between 4:20–4:40am to catch the magic. Yes, it’s early. Yes, it’s worth it. 🌄
Getting there. If Ubering, type in “Lion’s Head Parking Lot.” If driving, go early and may the parking fairy be ever in your favor 🧚♂️.
Pack smart. Layers, water, and a headlamp (phone flashlights work, but you’ll want your hands free for scrambling). Leave the drone and boom box at home — nobody wants that at 5am.
Choose your route. About 3/4 of the way up, the trail splits:
Fun route: ladders, staples, chains (scrambly & adventurous).
Alternate route: slightly longer, still scrambly, adds ~10 minutes.
Choose your own adventure!
Safety first. Incidents have been reported — hike with a buddy if possible. If I’m solo, I stick close to other hikers with headlamps in sight. Luckily, this trail is usually busy enough to find safety in numbers.
Know your limits. Some sections are steep and scrambly, so not ideal if you’ve got vertigo. But the payoff? 360° of jaw-dropping views: twinkling city lights, crashing waves, surreal mountains. There is NO better way to start the day 🙌🏼✨.
