The Mint Tea Ritual

Never rush this moment

Morocco

Mint tea in Morocco is not just a drink. It is a ceremony, a greeting and a sign of hospitality all at once. You will be offered it constantly in riads, in shops, in restaurants and in the souks. Always accept it.

The tea itself is strong gunpowder green tea brewed with an enormous amount of fresh mint and an equally enormous amount of sugar. It is poured from a height, sometimes dramatically high, to create a froth on top of the glass. The pouring is intentional and theatrical and completely wonderful to watch.

Do not rush it. Do not decline it. Do not ask for it without sugar. Just sit, watch the pour and enjoy one of the most genuine moments of Moroccan hospitality you will experience on the trip.

Kristina's tip: If you are in a shop and someone offers you mint tea, you are under no obligation to buy anything. Accept the tea, enjoy it genuinely and simply say no thank you when they show you their products. Most shopkeepers understand and appreciate the honesty far more than a reluctant purchase.
