How to Book Your Great Walk
First plan your dates early. The booking system opens 6 months before your hike date. For example, if you want to hike in October, booking opens on April 1. For popular tracks like Milford and Routeburn, places can be gone within hours.
Then go to the official DOC website at www.doc.govt.nz and find the Great Walk you want. Create an account in advance and be ready with your credit card when bookings open.
Choose your huts or campsites carefully. Some tracks offer both options. Huts provide mattresses, water, toilets, and cooking facilities but no food or bedding. Campsites are cheaper but require full gear
Once booked you’ll receive confirmation. Save it on your phone and print a copy just in case
Why You Must Book Early
Milford Track and Routeburn Track are in extremely high demand and book out in just a few hours once the system opens. If you’re serious about hiking one of these, you need to be online the day bookings open, ready to act fast
Tongariro Northern Circuit, Kepler Track, and Abel Tasman Coast Track also fill up quickly during summer and holidays.
If you miss out on the most popular tracks, consider alternative Great Walks like Heaphy or the new Hump Ridge, still stunning, and usually easier to book
