A rugged and scenic 4WD route just outside of Moab, Utah, offering dramatic desert views and a thrilling off-road experience. It’s a popular shortcut between Potash Road (Highway 279) and Highway 313, near Dead Horse Point and Canyonlands National Park.

Quick Facts:

• Distance: ~15 miles one way

• Time: 1–1.5 hours depending on conditions

• Difficulty: Moderate – high-clearance 4WD strongly recommended

• Not maintained in winter – snow or rain can make sections impassable

What to Expect:

• Pucker Pass: One of the most memorable features of Long Canyon Road. You’ll pass under a massive fallen boulder that forms a dramatic rock tunnel. It’s tight and steep, and should not be attempted in wet conditions or with oversized vehicles.

• Incredible Vistas: Enjoy sweeping views of the La Sal Mountains, red rock cliffs, and the desert below. Sunset here is especially magical.

• Wildlife & Flora: You may spot lizards, birds of prey, and desert blooms depending on the season.

Road Conditions & Safety:

• DO NOT drive this road after recent rain or snow. The clay-based soil turns to slick mud, making even the best 4x4s useless.

• Always check weather and road conditions before heading out.

• Bring plenty of water, snacks, and a spare tire – there is no cell service in many spots.

Camping & Pets:

• Long Canyon Road passes through BLM-managed land, and dispersed backcountry camping is allowed in designated areas. Camp at least 200 feet from the road and follow all Leave No Trace principles.

• Pets are allowed but must be kept under control and leashed when outside the vehicle.

Photography Tips:

• Sunset offers the best light for dramatic canyon shadows and golden-hour glow.

• Pucker Pass makes for a great foreground with the cliffs behind.

• A drone can legally be flown here, but avoid flying over hikers or other vehicles, and always follow FAA guidelines.

Long Canyon Road is one of the more accessible off-road routes near Moab, offering a ton of adventure and beauty without the intense crowds. Just be sure to come prepared, and avoid it altogether if storms are in the forecast.
