Stuffed crocodiles, fabric ponies for children, a cupboard full of watches and old cameras—where are we? We ask ourselves this question more than once as we stand inside Gangaramaya Temple, not quite sure what to make of it.

In fact, we are in one of Colombo's oldest Buddhist temples. However, it also has a museum section attached—one that, after our visit, we would classify as the most confusing museum on the entire island. Especially since Buddhism, at its core, has little to do with material possessions. Yet, among the exhibits, you’ll find old luxury cars, Chinese porcelain, safes, and all sorts of unexpected treasures that leave us both smiling and wondering about the stories behind them.

The temple itself is just as unique. Here, modern and traditional Buddhist architectural styles blend seamlessly, with visible influences from Thailand, India, and China. As a result, there is a countless number of Buddha statues from these different cultures, making the experience even more intriguing. It’s an unforgettable temple visit and definitely worth seeing.

DO explore the back part of the temple, where the museum is located—it’s both cool and strange at the same time.

DON’T wear a short skirt. But if you happen to be dressed inappropriately, they provide sarongsto cover up.
