Askja is an active volcano situated in a remote part of Iceland's central highlands, and its name Askja refers to a complex of nested calderas within the surrounding Dyngjufjöll Mountains. The area is only accessible for a few months due to its low rainfall and being far from the ring-road. NASA used it for training astronauts as part of the Apollo program. Askja has had two well known eruptions, in 1875 and 1961, as well as evidenced of other eruptions, which created the Öskjuvatn lake located in one of the calderas. Finally, today, it is a popular tourist destination, with camp sites, mountain huts, and a chance for a warm(ish!) bath in Víti Crater.
