Poça da Dona Beija is a thermal paradise located in Furnas, São Miguel, in the Azores. It's like stepping into a mystical oasis surrounded by nature and soothing hot thermal waters.

Picture yourself in a warm, mineral-rich pool, surrounded by lush greenery, with steam rising into the cool air. It’s basically an outdoor spa, but way better because it’s completely natural. Here’s everything you need to know before you visit.

How to Get There

Poça da Dona Beija is in Furnas, São Miguel.

45 minutes from Ponta Delgada by car

30 minutes from Ribeira Grande

A rental car is the easiest way to get there, but you can also take a guided tour or a public bus (though schedules are limited).

Parking

There’s a small parking lot nearby, but it fills up quickly in the evenings. If it’s full, you might have to park further down the road and walk a bit.

Info

1. The Thermal Pools

Poça da Dona Beija has five thermal pools, each fed by a natural hot spring. The water stays around 39°C (102°F) year-round, making it perfect for a soothing soak, whether it’s a chilly evening or a warm afternoon.

The pools are rich in iron, which gives the water a slightly orange tint. Locals swear by its healing properties, saying it’s great for your skin and helps with relaxation.

Heads up: The iron can stain swimsuits, so wear a dark-coloured one or something you don’t mind getting a little discoloured.

2. The Tropical Atmosphere

Unlike other hot springs that feel like big, open pools, Poça da Dona Beija is tucked into lush greenery, with winding paths, stone walls, and wooden bridges connecting the different pools. At night, soft lighting makes it feel even more magical.

3. Nighttime Soaking

One of the best things about Poça da Dona Beija is that it stays open until 11 PM. There’s something extra special about soaking under the stars, surrounded by steam and the sounds of nature.

Opening Hours

  • Monday–Sunday: 10:30 AM – 11:00 PM

  • Last entry is at 10:15 PM, so don’t show up too late.

  • Extra Clothes – You’ll want something dry and comfy to change into afterward.
