Îlet des Lataniers is one of the most secluded, slowest-living villages in Cirque de Mafate — nestled on a steep slope above the Rivière des Galets and accessed only by long, rugged footpaths. It's quiet, wild, and incredibly atmospheric. There are no roads, no shops, no signal — just a few homes, a church, and a handful of gîtes surrounded by mountains.

Main ways in:

• From Deux-Bras (La Possession) via Rivière des Galets (4–5 hours, with steep final climb)

• From Roche Plate or Cayenne, if you're on a multi-day loop

• Can also be linked to Îlet à Bourse for longer circular hikes

Once you arrive:

• Gîte stays include hot meals and basic dorms or rooms

• Local fruit trees and terraced gardens dot the hillside

• Spectacular sunrise views over the valley below

• No electricity or amenities — this is about disconnecting completely
