Skopje Fortress, or "Kale" as locals call it, is an ancient castle located in the city of Skopje in North Macedonia. It was first built in the 6th century on a land that was inhabited since the Neolithic Age. The fortress has lived through numerous wars and battles, with various rulers coming and going throughout the centuries, such as Byzantine Emperor Justinian I and Stefan Dušan, who declared himself the Emperor of the Serbian Empire at his coronation held in 1346. Recently, archaeological excavation funded by the Macedonian government revealed findings dating as far back as 3000 BC. There were also disputes regarding the ethnicity of the site between Albanians and Macedonians, although it remains open to this day. Skopje Fortress is definitely worth visiting for its grand history and majestic views of the Vardar river.
