Laki, also known as Lakagígar or Craters of Laki, is a volcanic fissure located in Vatnajökull National Park, Iceland. It erupted violently between June 1783 and February 1784, spewing out massive amounts of basalt lava and poisonous gases. This led to the death of over 50% of Iceland's livestock population and caused a devastating famine that killed at least a fifth of the human population. The eruption also had global consequences, causing a drop in temperatures and crop failures in Europe, as well as droughts in North Africa and India. Overall, Laki was one heck of a volcano that wreaked havoc on both Iceland and the rest of the world.
