My First Taste of Albania

I still remember the first time I visited Mrizi i Zanave: back in 2017, fresh off the plane in Montenegro, driving south to Tirana with my wife and her family. We pulled off the main road and wound our way through the countryside to a small village called Fishtë.

That dinner became my first true introduction to Albania, and I couldn’t have asked for a better welcome. The food, the atmosphere, the philosophy behind it all left a mark. Since then, I’ve gone back countless times. I bring visiting friends and family here, and without fail, it ends up being a highlight of their trip.

More Than a Restaurant

Mrizi i Zanave is unlike anywhere else in Albania: or anywhere I’ve been, really. It’s a restaurant, but it’s also a farm, a winery, a guesthouse, and a community project, all rolled into one. The entire concept is rooted in the land, the people, and the local traditions of the region.

The founder, Altin Prenga, has taken what could’ve been a great restaurant and turned it into a model for agritourism and community development. He’s created jobs, revived local agriculture, trained young people, and brought global attention to a small Albanian village. And he’s done it all while keeping the atmosphere down-to-earth and welcoming.

If you’re lucky enough to meet him while you’re there, you’ll see what I mean. He’s passionate, approachable, and clearly driven by something much deeper than food alone.

Creative, Local, and Seasonal

The food at Mrizi i Zanave is Albanian at its core, but reimagined with creativity and care. Everything is locally sourced, much of it grown or raised on-site, and each dish reflects the flavors of the region in unexpected ways.

There’s no fixed menu: what you eat depends on what’s in season and what’s freshest that day. But you can always expect a multi-course meal full of color, texture, and surprising combinations. From homemade cheeses and wild herb salads, to slow-cooked meats, pickled vegetables, and flaky-byrek with a twist.

They also produce three types of local wine, which pair perfectly with the food. If you get the chance, I highly recommend taking the wine and facility tour, it gives you a whole new appreciation for the scale and heart behind the operation.

Stay the Night if You Can

While most people come for lunch (and it’s absolutely worth a stop on any northern Albania itinerary), spending the night here is something else entirely.

The guest rooms are tucked away across the property and are beautifully designed. Waking up there is so peaceful, and it’s an amazing way to experience what Albania has to offer for agritourism.

Good to Know

  • Book in advance, especially for lunch. It’s a popular spot for Albanians and tourists alike.

  • It’s about a 70-minute drive from Tirana.

  • If you’re on a tight itinerary, a long lunch here is still very worthwhile, but if you have the time, stay overnight and fully sink into the experience.

  • The staff are always polite and professional, even when the place is busy. That kind of consistency says a lot.

Final Thoughts

If you’re visiting Albania, Mrizi i Zanave should be at the top of your list. Every time I come back, it reminds me why I fell in love with Albania in the first place. From great Albanian pastries to homemade cheeses, jams, and smoked meats, you can find a variety of delicious dishes while exploring the production facilities, vineyards, and fruit and vegetable fields.
