If you want to experience the maritime heart of Åland, head to Sjökvarteret — the Maritime Quarter on the eastern side of Mariehamn. It’s a small harbor area where traditional boatbuilding is still alive and well. Here you’ll find old wooden boats, shipyards, craft workshops, and red wooden buildings that give the place a timeless feel. This place is a photographers heaven! The boats, beautiful little church, wooden sheds, and details of the harbor make for some very atmospheric shots. The light is the best at sunset and sunrises.

You can wander around the small docks, watch boatbuilders at work, and visit tiny local shops selling handicrafts, jewelry, and maritime souvenirs.

In summer, Sjökvarteret hosts events and markets, and there’s a cozy little café where you can grab a coffee by the water. It’s an easy, peaceful stop if you’re exploring Mariehamn on foot or by bike.

Good to know: Sjökvarteret is open year-round, but it’s liveliest during the summer months. It’s located about a 15-minute walk from the ferry terminal and close to the city center.
