🌋 Strútslaug (Views of Hórmsárlón)
🗺️ How to Get There:
From the F210 (Fjallabaksleið syðri), access is typically made via the Strútur hut track near Mælifell. This route involves multiple river crossings and is only suitable for well-equipped 4x4 vehicles. After parking at the Strútur hut or nearby fork, it’s about a 4 km hike to the hot spring and plateau overlooking Hórmsárlón.
📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
July to early September, when highland roads are open and river levels are safe. Late afternoon light often creates stunning conditions on Hórmsárlón’s milky turquoise waters. Avoid in poor weather or early/late season due to flooding and isolation.
📸 Photography Tips
Best time of day:
Late afternoon to evening, when light filters through the glacial valley from the west and the colors of Hórmsárlón glow beneath cloud-filtered skies.
Recommended gear:
Drone, this is a drone paradise
Wide-angle lens for dramatic landscape layering
Telephoto for isolating braided rivers or distant glaciers and mountains
Composition ideas:
Fly drone out toward Hórmsárlón’s braided river delta, shooting top-down for abstract glacier flow patterns
Use the foreground ridges and lava fields to frame the glacier lake in wide shots
Shoot toward sunset for pastel tones reflecting off the glacial water
Capture fog and weather shifts rolling over the valley for mood and scale
