You can walk from Mahai'ula beach to Makalawena beach by following the lava path north of the little house. It takes roughly 20 min to walk from one beach to the other.

TRAVEL TIPS:

• Weather: It's very hot. Limited shade available.

• Transportation: A vehicle high off the ground (SUV or a 4x4 vehicle) is required to drive on the lava dirt road. It takes roughly 20 min (one way) from the front yellow gate to drive to the parking lot. You can also park at the yellow gate and walk in.

• What to bring: Water, snacks, or pack a lunch as there are few places to stop.

• Phone Service: Available.

• Bathrooms: Porta Potty available. No showers available.

• Parking: Limited parking spots. Make sure to hide your valuables and lock your car.

• Photography: Cameras are allowed.
