Vibrant lakes in Fukushima Prefecture

The Goshikinuma Ponds, located in Bandai-Asahi National Park in Fukushima, are a group of volcanic lakes known for their distinctive, naturally occurring colors. Formed after the eruption of Mount Bandai in 1888, these ponds are tinted by mineral deposits, resulting in hues that range from deep blues to pale greens. The colors vary depending on the season, weather, and time of day, offering subtle changes that make the area visually interesting.

While I love these views, it has been developed for tourists and part of the tourist trail in the area. With the limited view points in can feel crowded at times at the photo spots and along the main walkways. For this reason, I would recommend to visit early on the weekday. That way you can also get a better chance for a mirror reflection on the ponds with mountains in the background too before the wind picks up during the day.

There are also row boats here if you want to get out on the water.

Features of the Ponds

The ponds are connected by the Goshikinuma Nature Trail, a 3.6-kilometer path that allows visitors to explore several of them. Each pond has its own characteristics:

  • Bishamon-numa: The largest pond, known for its blue-green water and koi fish.

  • Aka-numa: Recognized for reddish tones that become more vivid in certain seasons.

  • Midoro-numa: A smaller pond with cloudy, milky water.

  • Benten-numa: A quiet pond with deep blue reflections.

Formation and Geology

The ponds were created when the 1888 eruption of Mount Bandai caused landslides and dammed rivers in the area. Minerals from the volcanic soil continue to influence the water’s colors, giving each pond its unique appearance. This geological history adds an element of scientific interest to the area.

Why Visit?

The Goshikinuma Ponds offer a manageable hike with scenic views of volcanic landscapes and forested surroundings. The trail is accessible and suitable for visitors looking for an easy walk through a naturally evolving environment. While not dramatic in scale, the ponds are notable for their subtle beauty and the peaceful atmosphere they provide.
