Rattenberg: Austria’s Smallest Town

Welcome to Rattenberg, a medieval gem nestled between the Inn River and the mountainside. It is officially the smallest town in the country, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in character. The entire town is a pedestrian zone, filled with colorful historic houses that make you feel like you’ve stepped back into the 14th century.

Javi’s Insider Tips:

The Glass Tradition: The town is world-famous for its glass-making. As you wander the streets, you’ll see many shops where you can actually watch master artisans blowing and engraving crystal. It’s a great place to see an ancient craft in action.

The Best View: For a fantastic perspective of the colorful rooftops and the winding Inn River, take the short 15-minute walk up to the castle ruins (Burgruine). It’s an easy climb and the absolute best photo spot in town.

Gateway to the Emerald Lake: Rattenberg serves as the perfect base for exploring the local nature. If you’re looking for a hidden escape, the stunning Berglsteiner See is located just a short distance away (you can find the full logistics for the lake in the dedicated section of my guide).

Logistics & Access:

Public Transport: Take the S-Bahn (S1) train from Innsbruck Central Station (Hauptbahnhof). The ride takes about 45–50 minutes, and the station is located right at the entrance of the old town.

Innsbruck Card: Great news! The train journey to Rattenberg is 100% included for free with your card, making this a perfect and budget-friendly day trip from Innsbruck.

On Foot: Once you arrive, you won’t need any transport. Rattenberg is entirely pedestrian-friendly and can be walked from end to end in just a few minutes, allowing you to soak in the relaxed atmosphere at your own pace.
