Standing proudly in the heart of Budapest, St. Stephen’s Basilica is named after Hungary’s first king, Saint Stephen, and is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Construction began in 1851 and finished in 1905, spanning over five decades due to financial difficulties and architectural challenges. The exterior is grand neo-classical, but it’s the interior details — marble columns, intricate frescoes, gilded altars, and the Holy Right Hand relic — that make it truly impressive.

The dome observation deck is accessible via stairs or elevator and offers 360° panoramic views of Budapest, from the Danube to the Parliament to the surrounding cityscape. The basilica also hosts concerts and organ recitals, which are especially magical in the serene, echoing interior.

You can combine St. Stephen’s Basilica + Dome climb into one great sightseeing route for panoramic views of Budapest. The combined ticket costs around HUF 2,500–3,000 (roughly €6–8), and tickets are not sold inside the basilica itself — you buy them at a small shop just outside the church.
