Lake MacDonnell is a famous salt lake in South Australia that is pink on one side and blue on the other. On our most recent trip in November, we were lucky enough to catch it in perfect conditions. The lake had just the right amount of water to give it that vibrant pink hue, and the other side was finally that beautiful deep blue. Driving between the contrast of the two colours is a magical experience, not to mention the unique photos you’ll be able to capture.
It’s located about 13 kilometres down a dirt road off the main highway through Penong. It’s a remote spot, so most people either stop here while making their way into Western Australia or after just crossing the border. I’d highly recommend visiting if you get the chance. It’s one of the most spectacular salt lakes I’ve ever seen and a dream for photographers.
That said, it can be hit or miss. We’ve visited this spot twice before when the lake wasn’t that pink and the water looked more brown than blue. You’ll need a bit of luck with the conditions, but it’s definitely worth checking out. Here are some tips on how to get the best chance of seeing it in good conditions:
Best months to visit: September–March (spring through early autumn).
Ideal conditions: sunny skies, some water in the lake after light rain.
Be aware: in long dry spells (usually in later summer), the lake can be dull or mostly white.
Best time for photos: Golden hour (sunrise/sunset) is best to bring out those warm colours. Early morning and late afternoon can also be good to help the colours stand out. Midday isn't ideal as the glare from the sun can reflect on the lake.
This road also leads to a nearby campground called Cactus, which is a great spot to spend the night by the coast.
