Gion is Kyoto’s most famous traditional neighbourhood, known for its wooden streets, teahouses, and old-Japan atmosphere. It’s not about rushing between sights here.

The best way to experience it is simply by walking, especially early morning or late afternoon when it feels calmer. You might hear people talk about spotting geiko or maiko, but remember this is still a working area, so it’s more about soaking up the vibe than chasing photos.

Gion also sits right between Higashiyama and central Kyoto, which makes it an easy stop as you move between temples, cafés, and the river. Even a short wander through the side streets gives you that classic Kyoto feel without needing a big time commitment.

Things to do in Gion:

  • Walk Hanamikoji Street for traditional wooden buildings

  • Stroll Shirakawa Lane along the canal

  • Visit Yasaka Shrine (beautiful in the evening)

  • Stop at Tatsumi Bridge for a quick photo

  • Try a tea ceremony or kaiseki-style meal

  • Grab matcha desserts or coffee at a local café

  • Continue walking toward Higashiyama’s historic streets
