Former Hokkaido Government Office —

In the heart of Sapporo, surrounded by gardens and ponds, stands the Former Hokkaido Government Office — one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks and a window into Hokkaido’s past. Locals simply call it the “Akarenga”, meaning red brick building, and its striking Western-style architecture feels straight out of another era.

Built in 1888 during Hokkaido’s early development, it once served as the center of government when Japan was modernizing the northern frontier. Today, it’s open to visitors as a small museum, showcasing historical documents, vintage maps, and exhibits about Hokkaido’s pioneers and natural heritage.

The real charm, though, is outside. The building’s symmetrical red bricks framed by seasonal scenery — cherry blossoms in spring, lush greens in summer, golden leaves in autumn, and soft snow in winter — make it one of Sapporo’s most photogenic spots. Whether you go inside or just stroll through the gardens, it’s the perfect short stop to soak in a bit of history and quiet beauty.

Why it’s worth it
Because it’s more than a photo spot — it’s a glimpse into Hokkaido’s story, wrapped in calm and classic architecture right in the middle of the city.

🕐 When to go

  • Morning or midday: best light for photos.

  • Evening: the building is beautifully illuminated.

  • Open daily (8:45–18:00), closed on public holidays.

💴 Prices

  • Admission: free

  • Small souvenir shop on-site

🚆 How to get there
About a 10-minute walk from Sapporo Station or Odori Station — the building sits between them, easy to include in a city walk.

🧭 Waldir tip
Visit during golden hour or snowfall — the red bricks and white snow make one of Hokkaido’s most iconic photo scenes. Pair it with nearby Odori Park or a coffee stop in the historic Clock Tower café just a few blocks away.
