Kleppstadheia is a gentle and broad mountain ridge located in the western part of Austvågøy on the Lofoten Islands. This scenic viewpoint is relatively easy to reach and offers a rewarding hike for those looking to explore the stunning landscapes of the Lofoten. A generally easy mountain hike that leads over good, and in some places steep and rocky, paths to a gentle viewpoint mountain. In the summit area, caution is advised in poor visibility, as the terrain drops steeply to the north and east.
Starting point: Drive along the E10 from Svolvær towards Leknes. Just after passing Kleppstad and shortly before the Gimsøystraumen Bridge, which connects Austvågøy to Gimsøy, turn right towards Brenna. Immediately on the right, you will find a small parking area near a bus stop (Google Maps coordinates: 68.258241, 14.275711).
Route: From the parking area, follow the road north towards Brenna. After passing a cattle grid, you’ll see a path branching off to the right, leading eastwards away from the road. Follow this path uphill through a steep section to reach a ridge. Climb through the small forest and approach the western flank of Kleppstadheia. The climb becomes steeper as the trail winds through light shrubbery, which gradually gives way to heather as you ascend. The view back towards the Gimsøystraumen strait, with its small islands and the rugged peaks of Vestvågøy, is stunning. Once on the summit you should enjoy the panoramic view.
