You know what they say: "Did you even visit Auckland if you didn’t take a trip to Waiheke Island?"

Waiheke Island is one of the most popular destinations in Auckland and is loved by locals and tourists. Known as the "jewel of the Hauraki Gulf" and often called New Zealand’s “Wine Island,” Waiheke is famous for its exceptional vineyards, wineries, and craft breweries.

What is there to do on Waiheke Island?

If you’re a wine lover, you’re in for a treat! Gorgeous boutique wineries are scattered across the island, offering tastings, cellar-door experiences, and mouth-watering food. I'm not a big drinker, but my favourites include Man O’ War, Mudbrick for its romantic hilltop views over Auckland, and Poderi Crisci for the ultimate Italian-style long lunch.

But it's not all wine and vineyards. Waiheke Island is a beautiful outdoor paradise, perfect for swimming, fishing, kayaking, and hiking. You’ll find some of Auckland’s best white-sand beaches here, like Palm Beach and cute seaside villages packed with art galleries, craft stores, and laid-back cafés. There are activities like ziplining, island tours and sailing. If you’re into hiking, I really recommend doing part of the Te Ara Hura trail, which offers some of the best coastal views ever. It's very easy to do, and the most accessible section is from Oneroa to Onetangi. You can even walk there from the ferry terminal!

How to get there

One of the best things about Waiheke Island is how easy it is to visit. Passenger ferries run frequently from downtown Auckland and Devonport (on the North Shore), with extra weekend sailings. The first ferry leaves at 6 am, and the last one back to Auckland Central is at 12:30 am. The Fullers360 ferry costs $29.50 one way or $59.00 return, with off-peak return deals at $44.00 for adults, $19.00 for children, and $98.00 for families.

If you'd like to stay longer, you can bring your car to Waiheke via the vehicle ferry from Half Moon Bay, but you'll need to plan ahead and book this in advance.
