Lake Louise is Banff National Park's most famous lake. Named after the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria, this glacier-fed lake sparkles turquoise in the sun. At some times, it can be more milky in colour due to the concentration of silty rock flour.

The lake is backdropped by Mount Victoria (3464m high) and the Victoria Glacier. On the opposite shore is the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, an icon of the national park for more than 100 years.

With all this in mind, it is no surprise that Lake Louise is very busy. But it is warranted - the lake is as beautiful as the photos show and there is a great range of hiking trails starting from the lake, including some of my favourites in the whole park.

If you're keen to just stroll, explore the flat Lakeshore Trail - this 600m long trail does get quieter further away from the parking and hotel area.

Paddling on the lake is also an option - bring your own kayak/canoe OR pay $165/hour for a rental.

Unlike nearby Moraine Lake, it is possible to park at Lake Louise though the number of spots are very limited and the price is $36 (!) for an all day ticket.

Alternative options:

  • Reserve the Parks Canada park-and-ride shuttle ($8/person) located at Lake Louise Ski Resort, 45 minutes drive from Banff. There are regular buses to Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, with a Connector Shuttle between them

  • Reserve the 8X Roam Transit bus from Banff to Lake Louise Lakeshore. This reservable express bus takes 55 minutes and costs $10/person. To visit Moraine Lake as well, buy the $25 ticket which includes access to the Parks Canada Lake Connector Shuttle

  • Book a spot on a private bus tour

A Parks Canada parks pass is required to explore Banff National Park ($22/day for a vehicle of up to 7 people).
