Somiedo covers over 700 square kilometers of high Asturian mountain terrain and it holds the largest population of brown bears in western Europe. You are unlikely to see one. The bears are present, monitored, and genuinely wild — not a managed wildlife experience but an actual predator population living in the same landscape you are driving through. The knowledge that they are there changes the feeling of the place in a way that is difficult to articulate and easy to feel.

The park is structured around a series of glacial lakes — Lagos de Somiedo — sitting in high mountain bowls above the treeline, accessible by a combination of road and trail. The main lake circuit reaches four lakes of varying size set in a landscape of bare rock and high pasture that feels genuinely remote in a way the Covadonga lakes — beautiful as they are — do not quite manage given their accessibility.

Drive to the village of Valle de Lago — the highest permanently inhabited village in Asturias — and use it as the starting point for the lake walk. The village is a cluster of stone houses and hórreos at the end of a road that has been narrowing for the last twenty minutes, which is the clearest possible signal that you are in the right place.

The walk to the nearest lake takes about forty minutes from the village. The full circuit of all four lakes is a four to five hour commitment — too long for a day that also has a drive in it. Walk to the first two lakes and return. The scale and the silence are present from the first one.
