Flying a drone is legal in France but we recommend being aware of and compliant with the drone regulations listed below before doing so.
Drone rules are governed by French national regulations, which require flying below 150 meters, staying within line of sight, not flying over people, and respecting privacy laws.
A pilot's license and drone registration may be required depending on the drone's weight and if it has a camera. It is also mandatory to check official maps like the Géoportail portal for restricted zones.
General rules for all drone flights
Altitude: Do not fly higher than 150 meters above ground level.
Visibility: Keep the drone in your sight at all times.
Privacy: Do not fly over people or record images that identify them without their consent.
Restricted areas: Avoid flying near airports, military sites, and other sensitive locations. Check official maps like Géoportail for no-fly zones.
Night flights: It is generally prohibited to fly at night.
Registration and licensing
Registration: You must register your drone with the French authorities if it weighs over 250 grams or is equipped with a camera.
Training: A pilot's license or certificate is often required. Check the DGAC (Direction Générale de l'Aviation Civile) rules for specific requirements based on your drone's class.
Remote ID: Remote ID is mandatory for most drones in France. Some C0 and C4 class drones may be exempt, but you must still follow EU regulations for remote identification.
Insurance
Recreational: Insurance is not mandatory but is highly recommended.
Professional: Professional and commercial use requires mandatory insurance.
