How do I get there?

Slovenia's capital, Ljubljana, is home to the main international airport in the country, and many European cities have direct flights here. You can also look into flying into Venice (Italy), Zagreb (Croatia), or Vienna (Austria) and then taking a local train or bus.

How much time should I plan to spend in Slovenia?

We spent 10 full days in Slovenia and still did not get to see and do everything we wanted! That being said, you can cover a lot of the highlights in 10 days. If you only have 3-4 days to explore, we recommend choosing a home base in Ljubljana or Bled and doing day trips from there. If you are into hiking and outdoor activities, you'll want to spend at least a week in Slovenia so you have time for outdoor excursions and to see Slovenia's highlights.

Do I need to rent a car?

This depends on how much time you plan on spending in Slovenia, what your interests are and how much ground you want to cover. We were able to see a lot of the country in 10 days thanks to the flexibility having a car gave us. If you're looking to visit smaller scenic towns, and get out of the main tourist areas, we highly recommend renting a car. If you only have a few days to spend in Slovenia and are mainly exploring Bled area and Ljubljana, a rental car is not necessary and you can easily get around using public transportation!

What is the food like?

We've gotten this question a lot and the food is amazing! Slovenia shares a border with Italy, Croatia, Austria and Hungary, and the local cuisine has influence from all of these countries. There is an emphasis on local ingredients, including fresh produce and homemade sausages and cheeses from local farms. You can even visit many of these farms, called tourist farms, and enjoy a homemade meal. Some of our favorite local foods were Jota (a sauerkraut stew) with sausage, Struklji (rolled dumplings), goulash, homemade meat and cheese plates, and the famous Bled cream cake. The pizza here is also just as good as Italy!

What are the can't miss places to visit?

Bled and Ljubljana are the most visited spots in Slovenia. As the capital, Ljubljana is the most accessible via plane from other countries and also has a charming historic town center. Bled is famous for its iconic lake and is conveniently located only a " " minute drive from Ljubljana airport. Many people only visit Ljubljana and Bled, and miss out on some of the most beautiful spots in Slovenia! We'd highly recommend visiting the Soča Valley, Triglav National Park, Logar Valley and Piran. If you're into wine and prefer cities over nature, also consider visiting Maribor. Check out our map for the must-do things to see and do in each of these spots!

What language is spoken in Slovenia?

Slovenian is the primary language, but most people speak at least some English. We also heard a lot of German speakers during our visit. Most restaurants had menus with and English and German translation.

What is the best time of year to visit?

Peak season is June to August when the weather is warm, the snow has melted on the mountains and the water is warm enough to swim in. With the nice weather comes more crowds! The shoulder months of April/May and September/October are the best months to visit in our opinion since the weather is still relatively nice and there are far less crowds than in the peak summer months. We visited in late May and had warm weather for most of our trip and experienced very minimal crowds! It was too early in the season for high elevation alpine hikes, but we were still able to hike some beautiful trails and there were wildflowers everywhere!
