Volcán Tungurahua, meaning "Throat of Fire" in Quichua, is an active volcano located in the Cordillera Oriental of Ecuador. Many indigenous locals refer to it as Mama Tungurahua ("Mother Tungurahua"). After a long period of quiescence, the volcano erupted in 1999. Since then, there have been multiple major eruptions, including violent explosions, pyroclastic flows, and ashfall. These eruptions led to the temporary evacuation of thousands of nearby residents from their villages and towns. The most recent activity includes a 2 kilometer-high eruption in December 2010. Despite its danger, Volcán Tungurahua still draws many adventurous visitors who hope to catch a glimpse of its fiery mouth! It's Hikeable.
