Packing List
Here's exactly what you should pack for your Edinburgh trip

Edinburgh, United Kingdom
Edinburgh weather can change within minutes (literally from blue skies to freezing rain), so the key is layers + waterproofs rather than single outfits.
𧼠Clothing
âď¸ Layers (essential all year round)
T-shirts or light tops
Long-sleeve tops
Thin jumpers or fleece layers
A warm sweater (yes, also for summer!)
For winter, thermal underwear can be helpful too if you get cold quickly
đ Layering is crucial because you can literally experience 4 seasons in a day, even if you donât expect it!
âď¸ Waterproof jacket (non-negotiable)
Lightweight, packable rain jacket OR proper waterproof coat
Ideally with a hood
Edinburgh is known for sudden rain showers, even in summer. An umbrella can be helpful too, but Edinburgh gets VERY windy, so it can be tricky to hold it.
âď¸ Warm outerwear (depending on season)
Winter (NovâMar): thick coat or insulated jacket
Spring/Autumn: medium-weight jacket
Summer: light jacket or windbreaker (still needed!) If youâre from a warm country, weâd still recommend bringing a fleece jacket or an insulated jacket for summer (temperatures can be as low as 10 degrees)
âď¸ Trousers / bottoms
Jeans or comfortable trousers
Leggings for walking days
Optional: waterproof trousers if you plan longer hikes (Arthurâs Seat etc.)
âď¸ Comfortable outfits for walking
Edinburgh is a walking city with hills, cobblestones and stairs, so comfort matters more than style.
đ Shoes
Comfortable walking trainers (best all-round option)
Waterproof walking shoes if possible
Optional: hiking boots if you plan hills or longer walks
đ Avoid heels or flimsy shoes â the Royal Mile and Old Town are steep and uneven.
𧣠Accessories
These make a big difference in comfort:
Scarf (especially autumn/winter)
Hat or beanie (wind can be strong even in summer)
Gloves (NovâMar essential)
Sunglasses (yes, even in Scotland!)
Moisturiser (cold wind can be harsh on skin, especially during winter)
đ Day bag essentials
A small backpack or crossbody bag is ideal for exploring the city.
Pack:
Wallet / credit card / phone to pay with
Water bottle (tap water is safe and good quality)
Snacks for long walking days (or just grab a meal deal in Tesco)
Portable phone charger / power bank
Umbrella (compact, wind-resistant if possible)
Maps / offline Google Maps download
Sunglasses + sunscreen (yes, the sun is very strong, especially in spring & summer!)
Camera for iconic shots of the city
đď¸ If you plan hiking (Arthurâs Seat / viewpoints)
Proper trainers or hiking shoes
Windproof jacket
Water + snacks
Phone fully charged
Extra warm layer (it gets windy at the top even on sunny days)
đĄ Final tip
If youâre unsure what to bring, always pack like this:
âOne warm layer more than you think you need + one waterproof layer always.â
The weather can change quickly and you donât want to get caught in a cold downpour (yes, itâs happened to us many times).
