Location:

Archers Knob Track is located in Narawntapu National Park on Tasmania’s north-central coast. The trail starts at the Springlawn visitor area, which is accessible by car via Bakers Beach Road. Parking is available at the trailhead and the track is well-signposted.

Hike length:

The return trip to the summit is approximately 4–5 km, taking around 2–2.5 hours depending on pace and how long you spend at the top. There is also a longer circuit option via Bakers Beach, around 9 km and 3 hours.

Difficulty Level:

Moderate — the track is mostly well-formed, with some gentle hills, a zig-zag climb to the summit and a few steps. Suitable for most walkers with a reasonable level of fitness.

Dogs allowed:

No, dogs are not permitted in Narawntapu National Park.

Entry cost / Park passes:

A valid parks pass is required for entry to Tasmania’s national parks. For example:

  • A Daily Pass (up to 24 hours): Per vehicle (up to 8 people) costs AUD $47.70. A per‑person pass (travelling by bus, cycle or on foot) costs AUD $23.85

  • A Holiday Pass (up to 2 months): Per vehicle (up to 8 people) costs AUD $95.50. Per person (travelling by bus/cycle/foot) costs AUD $47.75

This “holiday” option gives you access to all Tasmanian national parks for up to two months from the start date.

Note: Prices may change, so it’s best to check the official site before you go.

More information:

The trail begins with a walk through paperbark swamp and lush forest, including a boardwalk section and a bird-hide perfect for spotting wallabies, pademelons and birds. The main highlight is the summit of Archers Knob (114 m), which offers sweeping panoramic views over Bakers Beach, Springlawn and the surrounding coastline.

For those short on time or energy, the track can be done as a return trip to the summit, avoiding the full loop via Bakers Beach. If you choose the loop, you’ll descend to the beach and return along the coast, adding variety to the hike.

The track is ideal for photography, wildlife spotting and enjoying a mix of forest, coastal views, and a lightly challenging climb. Sturdy footwear, water, and sun protection are recommended, as some sections of the track can be exposed or slightly uneven.

Tip for wildlife lovers: At dawn you can see Forrester Kangaroos grazing around the visitor center. This is one of the only spots in Tasmania, where you can see them in the wild.
