Windhoek is the capital and largest city of Namibia, located in central Namibia in the Khomas Highland plateau area. It is around 1,700 m above sea level and has an estimated population of 431,000 as of 2020. The city holds a variety of activities and attractions, including cultural institutions, entertainment spaces, places of worship and historical sites. Windhoek's first settlement was established by Jonker Afrikaner, Captain of the Orlam people, in 1840. The city was later re-established by German imperial forces in 1890. It is known as the social, economic, political and cultural centre of Namibia, with nearly every enterprise, governmental body, educational and cultural institution headquartered there. There are plenty of unique things to see and do in Windhoek, from exploring the historic old town to marveling at the breathtaking scenery.
