Useful tips you should know (+discount code)
Renting a car is one of the best ways to explore Iceland, but it can also be one of the most expensive parts of your trip. Here are a few tips to help you save money while making sure you get the right vehicle for your adventure.

1. Choose the right type of car
A two-wheel-drive (2WD) car will always be the cheaper option, and it’s perfect if you’re staying on the main roads during the summer.
However, if you’re visiting in the winter, a 4x4 is a much safer choice. Icelandic weather can be unpredictable, and road conditions can change quickly. If you plan to visit remote regions, like the Highlands or F-roads, a 4x4 isn’t just recommended – it’s required.
2. Book early to lock in a better price
Rental car prices in Iceland increase as your travel date gets closer. The longer you wait, the higher the price you’ll pay. Booking early can save you a significant amount of money and ensures you have more vehicle options to choose from.
3. Be aware of seasonal price differences
The time of year you visit Iceland has a huge impact on rental prices. In summer, demand is extremely high, so you can expect to pay nearly double compared to winter rates. If you’re flexible with your travel dates, visiting in the off-season can save you a lot.
4. My recommended rental company
I’ve partnered with MyCar, a trusted local rental company. I chose them because I wanted to take the guesswork out of finding a reliable car, so you can have a stress-free experience and focus on what you came here for - an unforgettable adventure.
MyCar has one of the newest fleets in Iceland, competitive prices, and some of the best customer reviews out there.
When you book with my code, you’ll get an extra 3% off plus a FREE extra driver (normally $30).
