how to extend your trip to fiji

South Island, New Zealand

Fiji Airways runs a stopover program built to convert layovers into short stays. The system is straightforward: route to Australia or New Zealand on a Fiji Airways flight and add a multi-day pause in Nadi or the surrounding islands, and continue on the same ticket without an additional fare difference.

Core Mechanics

  • Stopovers allowed in either direction on most international itineraries.

  • Add the stopover during booking via the Fiji Airways website; modifying after purchase increases cost.

  • Minimum stay: one night. Practical range: one to four nights.

  • Luggage checked through only if the stop is under 20 hours; longer stopovers require baggage collection and re-check.

  • Fiji Airways schedules cluster around late-night and early-morning departures; expect compressed sleep cycles.

Entry Requirements

  • Most travelers receive visa-free entry.

  • Passport validity must exceed intended stay.

  • Agricultural declaration strict; dispose of fruit, snacks, soil-contaminated gear.

  • Standard customs limits enforced; do not assume “stopover” status gives exemptions.

Where Stopovers Actually Work
The functional stopover zone is Nadi and its immediate radius. Anything further becomes unrealistic on short stays.

  • Denarau: Controlled environment, predictable services, resort-heavy.

  • Mamanuca Islands: Closest island group for beach time. Boat transfers are frequent.

Stopover Packages
Fiji Airways sells bundled hotel + transfer packages. They reduce decision fatigue but lock you into specific properties. Independent booking offers better control over location and price but requires handling transport and timing.

Weather Reality

  • Tropical humidity year-round.

  • Wet season (November–April): cyclones possible, heavy afternoon rain.

  • Dry season (May–October): stable skies, higher prices.

Our Experience

On our way back to the US from New Zealand, we turned our Nadi, Fiji layover into a 3-night stopover.

We flew from Christchurch to Nadi, spent one night at an airport hotel in Nadi, then took a boat transfer the next morning via South Sea Cruises to an island resort in the Mamanuca Islands for the next two nights.

On our final day, we took the same boat transfer back to Nadi and were dropped off at the airport with plenty of time before our red-eye flight to the US.

Overall, the process was very easy, and we would recommend it if you're looking to extend your New Zealand trip a bit.
