A trip along Iceland's South Coast is not complete without a stop at the famous Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach. The stark black sand, gray basalt columns, "troll" rock sea stacks, and sea water rushing up on the shore, create an awe-inspiring site that is worth taking the time to experience in person.

The "troll" sea stacks are said to have been formed when trolls were accidentally caught in the sunlight and turned to stone.

Please stay away from the water because it can be dangerous. This beach is renowned for sneaker waves, which are waves that literally can sneak up on people and drag them out to sea. This situation can be easily avoided if you stay a safe distance away from the water. There are signs and a light system that warn people about what areas that are not safe, so take heed and have fun!
