This is one of the most iconic waterfalls in the country and it totally deserves to be. It's beauty alone makes it worth stopping for but there is more to it than that.

I enjoy seeing Skógafoss waterfall from below, especially when there is a rainbow present but one of the best parts of this waterfall is above it. You can take the stairs all year long and there are over 100 of them. However, the view of Skógafoss from the top is not what excites me.

During the summer, you can walk farther behind the waterfall one you get to the top of the stairs and there are more than 15 waterfalls along the path. This trail leads to the Icelandic Highlands and is part of the Fimmvörðuháls trail. I'm not suggesting that you take this trail all the way but an hour or so of walking is well worth it. Totally up to you but at least you know you have the option.
