Austurvöllur square has played an important role in Icelandic history and culture. It has been the site of numerous political demonstrations and rallies and is also home to the Icelandic Parliament building.

During the summer months, you’ll see this square brimming with people, especially if there is good weather. Throughout that time, you might encounter street performers, outdoor concerts, and other events in the square.

I enjoy walking through this square because of the fascinating architecture all around it, including the Icelandic Parliament building and the Reykjavik Cathedral. Plus, there are a ton of cafés, restaurants, museums, and other fun things to do just a stone’s throw away from this location.

The statue in the center of the square is of Jón Sigurðsson, a leader of Iceland's independence movement.

Fun fact -Jón Sigurðsson, 17th of June, was chosen as Iceland's National Holiday to recognize his efforts toward Icelandic independence.
