Atlanta Safety Tips for Visiting Families

Atlanta is a wonderful family city, but every big city has neighborhoods to know. Here's the straight-talk safety guide from a local mom.

Hi friends, Kiersten here! I get this question constantly: "Is Atlanta safe with kids?" My honest answer: yes, absolutely — for the typical tourist neighborhoods and attractions. Like ANY major city, there are areas to be smart in. Here's what I tell visiting families.

NEIGHBORHOODS THAT ARE FAMILY-SAFE AND TOURIST-FRIENDLY:

• Centennial Park / Downtown attractions area

• Midtown (Piedmont Park, Botanical Garden, High Museum)

• Buckhead (shopping, hotels)

• Inman Park & Old Fourth Ward (Beltline area, Ponce City Market)

• Decatur (charming downtown, family restaurants)

• Virginia-Highland (cute shops, walkable)

AREAS TO BE EXTRA AWARE (NOT SCARY, JUST SMART):

• Five Points MARTA station after dark — busy by day, sketchy by night

• Underground Atlanta — has been revitalizing but still feels tired; there are better options

• Anywhere along the I-20 corridor east of downtown after dark

GENERAL CITY SMART TIPS (THE SAME I'D GIVE FOR ANY BIG CITY):

• Don't leave anything visible in your car. Smash-and-grab break-ins happen in tourist parking decks.

• Keep your phone in a pocket, not in your hand walking down sidewalks.

• Use Uber/Lyft late at night instead of walking, even short distances.

• Trust your gut — if a parking deck or street feels off, leave.

KID-SPECIFIC SAFETY:

• Photograph your kids each morning in their outfit-of-the-day. If they get separated, you have an instant photo to show staff.

• Teach kids to look for moms with strollers if they get lost (we tend to be the most approachable). Most attractions also have lost-child protocols at guest services.

• Write your phone number on their wrist with a Sharpie or buy disposable kid wristbands ($5 on Amazon).

• Centennial Olympic Park has a designated meeting spot near the Olympic rings — agree on it as your "if we get separated" point.

EMERGENCY INFO:

• Major hospitals: Children's Healthcare of Atlanta (Egleston and Scottish Rite locations) — top-rated pediatric care

• Urgent Care: Piedmont Urgent Care has multiple locations and accepts walk-ins

MAMA HACKS:

• Save the address of your hotel as "Home" in Maps so kids know where home base is.

• Atlanta is generally safer than its reputation suggests in the touristy neighborhoods. Don't let outdated stereotypes scare you off this incredible city.
