Best Day Trips from Atlanta with Kids
Need a break from the city? Here are the Brook family's favorite half-day and full-day escapes within 2 hours of Atlanta.
Kiersten DeCook
Atlanta, United States
Hi friends, Kiersten here! One of the things I LOVE about raising kids in Atlanta is how easily we can escape the city for nature, mountains, or a charming small town. Here are the Brook family's go-to day trips, ranked by drive time.
UNDER 1 HOUR FROM ATLANTA:
Stone Mountain Park (30 min east) — Truly a full day. Cable car to the summit, dinosaur explorer trail, ropes course, plus the seasonal laser show. Annual passes pay off after 2 visits.
Yellow River Wildlife Sanctuary (35 min northeast) — Hand-feed deer, llamas, and goats. Toddlers lose their minds in the best way. Pack hand sanitizer.
Sweetwater Creek State Park (25 min west) — Easy trail to ruins of an old textile mill that look straight out of a movie (because they ARE — Hunger Games filmed here). Bring a picnic.
1-2 HOURS FROM ATLANTA:
Helen, GA (90 min north) — A Bavarian-themed mountain town that sounds tacky but is genuinely magical with kids. Tube the Chattahoochee in summer, Oktoberfest in fall, lights at Christmas. Stay overnight if you can.
Anna Ruby Falls (90 min north, near Helen) — Easy paved trail to TWIN waterfalls. Total wow factor for kids and grandparents alike.
Amicalola Falls State Park (90 min north) — Tallest waterfall east of the Mississippi. Lodge has rocking chairs and views; cabins with fireplaces are dreamy.
Tellus Science Museum (45 min north, Cartersville) — An underrated gem. Real fossils, planetarium, gem panning. Way less crowded than Fernbank.
Chattanooga, TN (2 hrs north) — A long day, but doable. The Tennessee Aquarium is fantastic and the Lookout Mountain attractions are old-school fun (Ruby Falls, Rock City, Incline Railway).
OUR FAVORITE COMBINATIONS:
• Helen + Anna Ruby Falls in one day
• Stone Mountain morning + Yellow River afternoon
• Amicalola Falls overnight + breakfast in Dahlonega's town square
MAMA HACKS:
• Leave Atlanta by 8am to dodge weekend traffic on I-75 and I-85.
• Bring a small cooler with sandwiches \u2014 mountain town food can be slow with hangry kids.
• The Georgia State Parks Annual ParkPass is $50 and pays for itself in 5 visits. Best deal in the state.
