Onsen & Ryokan with Kids — Yes, You Can
Hot springs and traditional inns are doable with kids, if you book the right kind.

Japan
Onsen (hot springs) and ryokan (traditional inns) feel intimidating with kids, but the right property turns it into a highlight of the trip. Our 2 nights at MAGMA Resort were the decompression chapter our family needed mid-trip.
WHAT MAKES A KID-FRIENDLY ONSEN/RYOKAN
• Private family baths (kashikiri-buro) — you can bathe together as a family without communal nudity
• Western-style beds OR futon-on-tatami options
• In-room dining or kid-friendly kaiseki menus
• Activity programs or play areas
• Yukata in kid sizes
• No strict 6pm dinner curfew (some traditional ryokans are inflexible)
LOOK FOR THESE WORDS WHEN BOOKING
• "Family-friendly" or "with children welcome"
• "Kashikiri" (private bath rental)
• "Kid's menu" or "shokuji-tsuki" (meals included)
• "Onsen with view" if rotenburo (outdoor bath) matters to you
GREAT KID-FRIENDLY ONSEN AREAS NEAR TOKYO
• Hakone — easy 1.5 hour Romance Car train, classic onsen town, lots of family ryokans
• Kawaguchiko / Mt. Fuji area — lake views, Fuji views, easier with car
• Shimobe / Yamanashi (where MAGMA is) — quieter, more nature
• Atami — closer to Tokyo, beach + onsen combo
• Nikko — shrines + onsen + waterfalls combo
THE ONSEN ETIQUETTE QUICK SHEET (for kids)
Take off shoes at entrance
Take off ALL clothes in the changing room — yes, all
Wash THOROUGHLY at the seated showers — hair, body, between toes
Rinse all soap off completely
Walk to the bath, no swimsuits
Soak quietly, no swimming, no splashing
Don't dunk your head under
The small towel never goes in the water (rest it on your head)
After soaking, dry off in the changing room, not the bathing area
KIDS UNDER 6
Most onsen allow kids under 6 to enter the opposite-gender bath with a parent. Kids 7+ generally must use the gender-matched side. This is when private family baths become essential.
TATTOO POLICY
Many traditional onsen do not allow tattoos. If you have any — even small ones — either book a tattoo-friendly onsen, a private bath, or use waterproof tattoo cover patches. MAGMA and many newer resorts are tattoo-friendly.
WHAT TO PACK FOR ONSEN STAYS
• Hair tie for long hair
• Slip-on sandals (the indoor slippers from your room)
• Light pajamas under your yukata if you're shy
• A swim diaper for non-toilet-trained kids (some onsens allow these in private baths only)
• Earplugs if you're a light sleeper on a futon
KAISEKI (THE MULTI-COURSE DINNER)
Traditional ryokan dinners are 8–12 courses, often quite raw, sometimes hours long. With kids, ask in advance about kid-friendly menus. Many ryokans will substitute with simpler dishes (tempura, rice, plain protein) if you ask politely. Our dinners were actually a buffet, which was perfect for us!
IF YOU ONLY DO ONE NIGHT
Do it. Even one night at a kid-friendly ryokan changes the rhythm of your trip and gives the kids a unique cultural memory.
