Atlanta thunderstorms come out of nowhere. Here are this mom's go-to indoor backup plans when the weather turns.

Hi friends, Kiersten here! Atlanta weather can flip from sunny to thunderstorm in 20 minutes flat — I learned this the hard way at Piedmont Park with three little ones and zero rain gear. Bookmark this list for the inevitable rainy afternoon.

OUR TOP RAINY DAY PICKS (BY AGE):

AGES 0-3:

• Children's Museum of Atlanta — designed for under-8s, soft play areas

• High Museum's free toddler zone

• LEGOLAND Discovery Center at Phipps Plaza

• Indoor playgrounds at Catch Air or Monkey Joe's

AGES 4-7:

• Georgia Aquarium — could easily kill 4 hours, fully indoor

• Center for Puppetry Arts — workshop where kids make their own puppet to take home

• Fernbank Museum of Natural History — dinosaurs, NatureQuest play space

• World of Coca-Cola — about 2 hours, all indoor

AGES 8+:

• College Football Hall of Fame — surprisingly fun even for non-fans, big indoor turf field

• Tellus Science Museum (Cartersville) — easy indoor day trip

• Escape rooms in Buckhead (kid-friendly versions exist)

RAINY DAY MALL HACK:

When all else fails, head to Phipps Plaza in Buckhead. LEGOLAND is there, plus Nordstrom has a stroller-friendly café. Lenox Square next door has the AMERICAN GIRL store. You can easily kill 4 hours.

BACKUP-BACKUP PLAN:

Hotel pool! If your hotel has an indoor or covered pool, save it for rainy afternoons. We've turned thunderstorm afternoons into our kids' favorite memory of Atlanta this way.

MAMA HACKS:

• Buy attraction tickets the morning of, AFTER you check the weather radar. Most allow same-day timed entry.

• A movie matinee is a perfectly valid travel day activity. Don't let Instagram make you feel bad about it.

• Atlanta has tons of trampoline parks (Sky Zone, Urban Air) — burn off energy when you're stuck inside.

• Download the WSB-TV weather app — Atlanta meteorologists are seriously the best in the country.
