Up the hill from Arashiyama Bamboo Forest there's a wild Japanese macaque sanctuary where 120+ snow monkeys roam free — AND the viewpoint at the top has the best panoramic Kyoto view in the city. The catch: it's a 20-minute uphill hike to get there. With kids, this is a YES if they can walk on their own.
What makes it special: the monkeys aren't in cages — YOU are. There's a small feeding hut at the top where humans go inside (behind mesh) and feed the monkeys peanuts and apple pieces through the wire. Outside the hut, monkeys lounge on rocks, groom each other, chase babies around, and basically ignore tourists. The view from up here — all of Kyoto laid out below — is the best in the city. No exaggeration.
Kid tips:
• Best for ages 4+ who can hike up a 20-min uneven trail. Toddlers plus little kids = babywear if they tire (no strollers — the trail is steep and rocky).
• RULES the kids MUST know before going: do NOT make eye contact with monkeys (they read it as aggression), do NOT show food outside the feeding hut, do NOT touch them, do NOT use flash photography. Brief them BEFORE the hike up.
• Monkeys CAN be unpredictable — keep little hands away from snack-y bag pockets. Babies should be in a carrier facing inward.
• The snack stand at the top sells the food (don't bring your own — they'll smell it).
• Bring water. The hike is shaded but humid in summer.
• If your kid taps out halfway, the lower trail still has a partial view. The summit is the best, though.
• Closes around 4pm — start the hike no later than 2:30pm.
We pair this with the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, Tenryū-ji temple, and a stop on Togetsukyō Bridge — a perfect Arashiyama half-day with kids.
