Nara Park is the BUCKET LIST kid experience in Japan — 1,200 free-roaming sika deer wandering around a beautiful 660-hectare park, considered sacred messengers of the gods. They've learned to BOW for crackers (yes, really), and feeding them is the most magical, delightfully chaotic experience your kids will probably ever have.
What makes it special: These deer are completely wild but extremely habituated to humans — they walk up to you, nudge you, follow you, and bow politely (or aggressively, depending on the deer) for a shika senbei cracker. The park surrounds Tōdai-ji and Kasuga-taisha, so you can combine deer-feeding with major temple visits in a single day. The cherry blossom and autumn views are unreal.
Kid tips:
• FREE entry. Buy deer crackers (¥200 a pack) from official vendors only — do NOT feed them human snacks.
• Best for ages 3+. Toddlers plus little kids — hold the crackers HIGH or hand them to a parent. Pushy deer can knock over little ones.
• SHOW EMPTY HANDS to deer when out of crackers — they'll usually back off.
• Stroller-friendly across most of the park.
• Bathrooms throughout the park, plus at Tōdai-ji and the visitor center.
• Bring water and snacks for kids — vendors are limited inside the park.
• Plan 3-4 hours minimum for park + Tōdai-ji.
• Use Kintetsu Nara Station (closer) or JR Nara Station (longer walk).
• Pro tip: avoid eating in the open — deer will mob you.
We pair this stop with Tōdai-ji, Nakatanidou (mochi pounding), and Kasuga-taisha for a perfect Nara day with kids.
