If your kids hate hiking but you want THAT Mt. Fuji shot, this is your move. A 3-minute cable car carries you up Mt. Tenjō to a viewing deck with a wide-open postcard view of Fuji and Lake Kawaguchi spread out below — zero effort, maximum payoff.
What makes it special: the whole experience is themed around the Japanese folktale "Kachi-Kachi Yama" (a tanuki and a rabbit), so there are cute statues and photo ops everywhere that toddlers plus little kids love. At the top, there's a small shrine, snack stands selling tanuki dango (sweet rice dumplings), and a tiny rabbit-shaped bell to ring for good luck. The view is the real star — on a clear morning, Fuji looks unreal.
Kid tips:
• Best for ALL ages, including babies in carriers. Strollers don't fit in the cable car — fold it up at the base or babywear.
• Go EARLY (first ride is around 9am) for clearest Fuji and shortest lines. By 11am the queue is 30+ minutes.
• The viewing deck has a low fence with a slatted floor near the edge — hold tight to climbers.
• Round-trip ticket is the easy choice. The walking trail down is doable with older kids (30 min, partly stairs) but not with littles or strollers.
• Cash or IC card. Restroom is at the base, NOT at the top.
• Pair it with the swan boats on the lake afterward — littles will be SO into them.
We pair this with Lake Kawaguchi, Oishi Park, and a stop at Hoto Fudo for thick warming udon — a perfect Fuji morning with kids.
