Real talk — if you've ever pinned a Japan photo, it was probably this one: the five-story Chureito Pagoda framed by cherry blossoms with Mt. Fuji rising behind it. The photo lives at the top of Arakurayama Sengen Park. The catch: you have to climb 398 stairs to get there. With kids. Yes, it's worth it.
What makes it special: the climb itself is short (10-15 min slow with kids) and shaded, with a few rest spots. The reward at the top is genuinely jaw-dropping — a panoramic deck where Fuji, the pagoda, and the whole valley line up perfectly. In sakura season (early-mid April) it's bonkers crowded but unreal. Autumn (mid-November) is gorgeous and quieter. Even in summer the view is incredible.
Kid tips:
• Best for ages 3+ who can walk on their own. Toddlers plus little kids can handle the stairs WITH breaks; under-3 = babywear, NO strollers.
• Go at sunrise or right at opening (visitor center opens 8:30am). Tour buses arrive around 10am and the photo deck becomes elbow-to-elbow.
• Bring water and a snack — there's a vending machine at the base but nothing on the trail.
• Wear closed-toe shoes. The stairs are uneven in spots.
• If your kids tap out at the halfway point, the mid-level shrine still has a nice Fuji view. No shame in stopping there.
• Public bathroom at the base before you start. There IS one at the top but it's small.
• From Lake Kawaguchi: 30-min drive or take the train to Shimo-Yoshida Station + 10-min walk.
We pair this with a Lake Kawaguchi morning and a Hoto Fudo udon lunch — a perfect Mt. Fuji day with kids.
