OK if you only do ONE thing in Nara besides the deer, make it this. Nakatanidou is the famous mochi shop where two guys pound fresh mochi at LIGHTNING speed — like, it has to be seen to be believed. They yell, they swing the giant wooden mallet, and one guy flips the mochi between blows with bare hands. Your kids will be GLUED. And then you eat the warm yomogi mochi (filled with sweet red bean) right there.
What makes it special: This isn't a tourist gimmick — they've been making mochi this way for generations, and it's part of why Nara is famous. The performance happens roughly every 30 minutes throughout the day (no exact schedule — they post a sign when they're about to do it). Watching the team's coordination is mesmerizing for kids and adults alike.
Kid tips:
• Best for ALL ages — even the youngest littles love watching the action.
• The mochi is FRESH and warm — perfect snack for hangry toddlers plus little kids.
• Cash only, around ¥200 per piece. Bring small bills.
• Crowds gather BEFORE each pounding — stake out a front spot 5-10 min ahead.
• No bathroom on site — use the public ones near Kintetsu Nara Station.
• Located on the main pedestrian road from Kintetsu Nara Station to Nara Park (about 5 min walk from the station).
• They sometimes post the next pounding time on their Twitter/X if you want to plan it.
We pair this stop with feeding deer at Nara Park, Tōdai-ji, and a quick visit to Kasuga-taisha for a perfect Nara day with kids.
