Fushimi Inari Taisha is THE iconic Kyoto shrine — thousands of vibrant vermilion torii gates winding up the side of a sacred mountain. You've seen it on every Japan postcard ever. With kids, the trick is timing: go EARLY (or late) and you'll have entire stretches of the gates to yourself, which is honestly magical. By 10am, it's tour-bus chaos.
What makes it special: This is the head shrine for Inari, the Shinto deity of rice and prosperity, and the gates are donated by Japanese businesses (look for the dates and company names on the back). The trail to the summit is about 4km round-trip, but you DON'T need to do it all — walking 20-30 min in still gets you the full experience. Stop at Yotsutsuji intersection (halfway up) for great Kyoto views.
Kid tips:
• FREE entry, open 24/7. GO AT SUNRISE for empty gate photos and mystical vibes.
• Best for ages 3+ — toddlers plus little kids will love the colors but tire on the climb.
• NOT really stroller-friendly past the main shrine — it's stairs and uphill from there.
• Carrier is your best friend for littles.
• Just walk the lower trails (15-30 min in) and turn around — you'll get the iconic shots.
• LOTS of food stalls outside the entrance — grilled mochi, kitsune udon, ice cream.
• Bathrooms at the entrance and at Yotsutsuji — plan accordingly.
• Right at JR Inari Station (5 min from Kyoto Station) or Fushimi-Inari Station (Keihan Line).
• Pro tip: hire a guide on busy days — turns the climb into a story for the kids.
We pair this stop with Sannenzaka, Ninenzaka, Kiyomizu-dera, and Pontocho for a perfect Kyoto day with kids.
