Hōkan-ji Temple, better known as the YASAKA PAGODA, is the most photographed view in all of Kyoto — a 46-meter, 5-story wooden pagoda rising above the traditional rooftops of Higashiyama. The pagoda dates back to 592 AD (rebuilt in 1440), making it one of the oldest in Kyoto. Walking up the cobblestone street toward it, with the pagoda framed by old wooden shop fronts, is genuinely one of the most magical moments in Japan.
What makes it special: This iconic VIEW from Yasaka Street is FREE — you don't even need to enter the pagoda to get the famous shot. If you DO enter, you can climb the wooden interior of the pagoda (one of the only pagodas in Japan you can go inside), but it's only open select days. The street feels like time travel — traditional shops, kimono-clad visitors, and the pagoda always rising above.
Kid tips:
• The exterior view is FREE. Pagoda entry is ¥400, kids cheaper, but check days/hours — it's not always open.
• Best for ALL ages — toddlers plus little kids love spotting the pagoda from far away.
• GO EARLY (before 9am) for empty cobblestones and the iconic photo without crowds.
• NOT stroller-friendly — cobblestone streets are bumpy. Carrier easier with littles.
• Wear good walking shoes — the slope up to the pagoda is steep.
• Pair with a kimono rental for unforgettable family photos here.
• Lots of cute snack shops on the way up — try Yatsuhashi cinnamon mochi.
• 5-min walk from Sannenzaka, Ninenzaka, and Kiyomizu-dera — part of the same walking route.
We pair this with Sannenzaka, Ninenzaka, Kiyomizu-dera, Maruyama Park, and Gion for a perfect Higashiyama walking day with kids.
