The Togetsukyō Bridge ("Moon Crossing Bridge") is the iconic wooden bridge that spans the Katsura River in Arashiyama, with the forested mountains of Mt. Arashi rising behind it. It's been here in some form since the 9th century, and the views from it (or from the riverbanks looking at it) are some of the most beautiful in all of Japan. Especially STUNNING in autumn when the mountains turn red.
What makes it special: This is the central landmark of Arashiyama — every visit to the area passes by it. The riverbanks on both sides have wide flat paths perfect for kid breaks, and you can rent rowboats in the warmer months for a paddle on the river. The bridge itself is open to cars and pedestrians, so be a little careful with kids — stick to the wide pedestrian sidewalk.
Kid tips:
• FREE — cross the bridge anytime, no ticket needed.
• Best for ALL ages — toddlers plus little kids LOVE the views and watching boats below.
• Stroller-friendly! Wide flat sidewalk on the bridge.
• BEST views during cherry blossom (April) and autumn leaves (Nov).
• Rent a rowboat (¥1,400/hour) on the south side in spring, summer, and fall — epic kid memory.
• Bathrooms at Saga-Arashiyama Station and along the riverbank.
• Tons of soft serve, mochi, and matcha shops on the north side — perfect snack stops.
• 5-min walk from Arashiyama Station (Hankyu/Keifuku) and 15 min from Saga-Arashiyama Station (JR).
• Pro tip: visit at SUNSET for golden hour over the river.
We pair this stop with the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, Tenryū-ji, and the Arashiyama Monkey Park for a perfect Arashiyama day with kids.
