OK this was hands-down one of our FAVORITE memories from Tokyo — renting kimonos as a family and walking around Asakusa together. KIMONO U Asakusa has a HUGE selection (hundreds of patterns), kid sizes from toddler up, and the staff are so patient with little ones. They do your hair, give you a matching bag, and you can wear it ALL DAY — even if you head to dinner.
What makes it special: They have one of the best kid kimono selections in Tokyo, including boy hakama (the samurai-style outfit). The shop is right near Sensō-ji, so you can step out the door and take photos at one of the most iconic temples in Japan in full kimono. Photo packages available if you want a pro shoot in their studio.
Kid tips:
• Book ONLINE in advance, especially for cherry blossom and fall seasons — prices and availability are way better.
• Kid kimonos start around ¥3,500. Expect 30-45 min to dress everyone (longer with toddlers plus little kids).
• Skip the hair styling for very young littles — they fidget and it eats time.
• Bring soft socks/tights for kids — the wooden geta sandals can rub.
• PACK comfortable shoes for after — walking long distances in geta gets tiring fast.
• Lockers on site for your real clothes/bags.
• 5-min walk from Asakusa Station (Ginza/Asakusa lines), 2 min from Sensō-ji.
• Plan to keep the kimono on 4-6 hours to make the price worth it.
We pair this rental with Sensō-ji, Nakamise Street, and a Sumida River cruise for the most magical Asakusa day with kids in kimono.
