teamLab opened a new permanent installation in Kyoto in late 2024 — Biovortex — and it's an absolute kid magnet. Imagine giant rooms full of swirling projected flowers, mirrored infinity spaces, and digital koi fish that scatter when your kid runs through them. It's the Kyoto answer to teamLab Planets and Borderless in Tokyo, but smaller, more focused, and (in our experience) less crowded.

What makes it special: this isn't a "look but don't touch" museum — it's designed to be walked through, sat on, splashed in. Several rooms respond to movement (touch a wall, the projection ripples; sit down, flowers bloom around you). Toddlers plus little kids are the ideal audience here — they get the magic instinctively. Older kids and grown-ups will be just as enchanted.

Kid tips:

• Best for ALL ages, especially 2-10. Babies in carriers love the lights and sounds.

• BOOK ONLINE. Walk-ups often sell out, especially weekends and school breaks. Time-slot tickets only.

• Allow 1.5-2 hours. Don't rush — the magic builds when you sit in each room for 5+ minutes.

• Wear shorts or roll up pants for the water rooms. Lockers are provided for shoes/bags. Some rooms = barefoot only.

• NO strollers inside. Babywear or hand-walk only. Stroller parking at the entrance.

• Avoid weekends and the 3pm-5pm window if you can. Earliest entry slot = magic.

• Bathroom + kid-friendly nursing rooms inside.

• Pair with Nishiki Market lunch beforehand or Kyoto Railway Museum after.

We pair this with Nishiki Market, a Kamogawa River walk, and a kimono evening in Higashiyama — a perfect Kyoto sensory day with kids.
