Pontocho is the narrow lantern-lit alley running parallel to the Kamogawa River — maybe the prettiest 5 minutes of walking in Kyoto. It's classic old-Japan vibes: paper lanterns, wood storefronts, the occasional geisha hurrying past. With kids, it's a quick experience, not a long destination, but the magic is real.
What makes it special: the alley really only "works" at dusk, when the lanterns flicker on and the river breeze hits. It's a 1-block-wide pedestrian street with restaurants tucked into both sides — mostly traditional kaiseki and izakayas (many adults-only or no kids). The point of bringing kids isn't dinner here; it's the WALK. Older kids love the moodiness. Littles love the lanterns.
Kid tips:
• Best for ages 4+ for the experience. Toddlers plus little kids will tolerate the walk if it's brief.
• Go right at dusk (around 5:30-6:30pm depending on season) for the lantern magic. Earlier and the lanterns aren't on. Later and it gets adult-only-ish.
• Most restaurants in the alley are NOT family-friendly (small, traditional, expensive, no high chairs). Don't plan dinner here — plan a walk-through.
• Stroller works but it's narrow and crowded at peak hour. Carrier is easier.
• Pair it with dinner along the Kamogawa River boardwalk (more casual options) or head to Nishiki Market for kid-friendly snacks.
• No public bathrooms in the alley itself. Use one before you start at Sanjō or Shijō Station.
We pair this with an early Gion stroll and dinner along the Kamogawa River — a perfect Old Kyoto evening with kids.
